Unfortunately, for many centuries in many parts of the world that had become the only way that we were allowed access to Spirit without risking persecution, so stepping back to question meant stepping into a void and leaving Spirit behind altogether. Into this void came the ways of our global culture. Its promises for delivering meaning and purpose by becoming one cog in a great holy coal-powered mechanism gave us a situation that was ripe for people devoting themselves to all kinds of “larger-than-us” systems that were completely devoid of Spirit – workplaces, governments, and big brands to name a few. That many are seeking to reconnect spiritually right now comes at a time when this bigger-than-us machine that we have been toiling for is both falling apart and threatening to take much of the life on earth with it. Scientists don’t just throw phrases like “mass extinction event” for no reason. In this space we need something to rest into more than ever. A return to the ways of our ancestors who understood with their hearts, minds, bodies and spirits that they were connected to The Spirit, The Cosmos, The Field, God…whatever you want to call it. The body of life that pulses with one heart that beats inside each of us. What I notice in my practice is that so much suffering comes from people feeling so alone. That feeling translates into the realms of the body and mind and can feed deeply into patterns of mental and emotional stress, physical disease, feelings of despair and purposelessness, sabotaging patterns of isolation, and so much more. That we need a sense of oneness with the larger field of life for our own personal health is increasingly understood. That we also urgently need it for our own collective health is apparent in the wilful neglect and outright harm that is perpetuated, over and over and over. It amazes me how much this is understood by people, and how much longing we have for this, but how little we know about where to begin. We are often even embarrassed to admit to ourselves that we are seeking Spirit let alone admit it to anyone else. I admit, it felt a bit awkward when I started to openly speak of Spirit in front of my family and friends that would not have ever associated me with being a spiritual person. I risked (and received) many sidelong glances, a few eyerolls, and plenty of giggles. But I also received shy questions, warm smiles, and surprised affection. It is now such a common part of my vocabulary that every day I get to celebrate having both friends and family AND Spirit in my life. Like any journey, this one begins with a few tentative and perhaps clumsy steps. And continues with plenty more tentative and clumsy steps! But this is what each of us can do, and perhaps we must, for all of the life on this planet that never left the sphere of Spirit but that will very much be taken down with us if this ship continues to sink. And remember, you aren't alone in this. --- In Kingston? So much to think about! So many aspects of attaining spirituality. I have to change the way I view life and the world I live in.
